Truckhaven Area

Recommended Posts

I've always wondered what camping is like in this area for my family. Let me know what you think after your trip.

Thanks

I don't have any photos to share but wanted to say a few things in response to Mac's post in this thread: http://www.dualsport-sd.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2542

I deviated from the BBTR map and camped fairly close to S22 (just past the insection of S22 and the Cross Over Trail) since it's easy access in and out (hardpack - no 4 wheel drive necessary), close to a fun serpentine trail (see 3A/4A tracks - same area/trail we rode in the Desert Dash), and there are rest rooms nearby as well as covered/shaded patio tables....no need to camp waaaaay back to avoid crowds this time of year......and plenty of wide open/flat terrain to keep an eye on the kiddo's and/or new riders getting their bearings on bikes/quads for the first time...

FYI - the 3A/B tracks I posted that lead out towards the Honda Monument require a street license plate once you get within about ~.6 miles of the monument.....we didn't ride all the way over to the monument since we were on quads at the time......the 3B track takes you over by the Phone booth.....I'd judge all of the tracks I posted that are on the north side of S22 as intermediate to advanced.....they all have some rocky/knarly sections.....not an area for new/inexperienced riders....therefore the same assessment applies to the 6 palm/phone booth track and Squeeze arch track......

The 4 A/B Pumpkin Patch loop is a different story......we took Fred's son on the entire ~24 mile loop on a TTR125L (his first real "trail" ride).....and he did great!.....my gal-pal, Kathy, also rode it on a quad as did her son.....fun loop for all skill levels......the Gas Dome/Artesion Well loop is also suitable for most riders but it is a bit more rocky/challenging in places than the Pumpkin Patch loop

The Milkshake run is a fun/short/high speed bomb down the wide open Arroyo Salada Wash.....once you cross under 86 you hang a hard left and head up to a dirt path that parallels Hwy 86.....to the best of my knowledge, it's a non issue to ride non street legal bikes/quads on this path.......we've been doing it for years......then you cross over the paved surface street to Super Burger once you reach it......the burgers/shakes at Super Burger are pretty tasty after a morning/afternoon of riding.......also easy for any other family members/friends/non riders to meet you over at Super Burger.....it's located right at the intersection of S22 & 86.....and only a few minutes drive away from where we camped......

Go check it out and have a blast!

thanks, when it gets cool, I will try the monument and phone boothtracks. I've done the pumpkin patch and artisan well runs and been down the other washes. Only problem is I don't have a gps...

I love that area - have not ridden there in about 3 years but I did take the quad to the phone booth. We came in from below the booth and the narrow was was a bear with the Raptor - never saw signs indicating that the phone booth was in a "freeway legal" area.

Burgers are good at your spot - check the proposed map for Salton Sea in the back of the restaurant -- It has a place called Mullet Island!

Hi Chris

I usually spend my time either along Pole Line Road riding in the San Philope Hills or the dry lake bed on south Split Mountain road. The main reason is that my wife insists having access to a hot shower (Ranger Station) at the end of the day. Not that I ever get dirty or smell bad. Are there any showers near that area?

Also, I posted some photos on your West Fest of the area near Page.

No showers.......dry camping......BUT, my toybox carries quite a bit of water......so, if access to a quick shower is what it takes for you and your wife to visit and/or camp, I'm sure we can accommodate "her" needs........you, however, need to bring extra deodorant :P

I've been going out to that area to ride for almost 35 years. My aunt and uncle started taking me and my brother out there along with my cousins back in 1973. Used to ride all over the place on a Yamaha 175 Enduro!

We will be heading out there the weekend prior to Thanksgiving and will be leaving before the craziness and crowds show up.

As for showers, there used to be a public park in Salton City that had a pool and bathrooms with showers. I remember climbing the fence as a kid to get in there and they were COLD! They may still be there...

We used to also go soak in the Hot Springs (before the nudist crowd started living there). They were dynamited years ago and have since dried up.

Lots of interesting riding in that area. Canyons like the Tectonic Gorge, washes, climbing hills, etc. make this area always a good place to set up base camp.

Any way you can check on the showers? Pole Line road has great riding terrain to the east but has been getting crowded in recent years. Split mountain road is still prety good and has access to the ranger station showers.

Chris

I was especially charming taking my very lovely wife to dinner this evening and she agreed to go to the desert for the 15th & 16th. Looks like we are in. I will be driving an older Jamee C class motorhome with at least one Husqvarna (maybe two), a Honda XL and a blue Suzuki quad.

Don

Nice work......I hope to be out there before night fall on Friday the 14th......may have a decent size group......some friends from work are coming too......

May or may not head over that way......depends on the crowd.......you can get close to the Honda Monument without a street plate but not all the way......no street plate required for the phone booth......

Alex has a GPS.......download the tracks I posted earlier:

Sorry Roger

That's my other main hobby in life. My wife and I have been professional competitors and teachers for over 22 years. We are both Dance faculty members in the Performing Arts Department at Palomar. It really is great fun once you get over struggling with the basics.

Here is the link to my web page at Palomar College.

Did I mention my Toybox has outdoor speakers? (lame/weak speakers but they're functional).........Maybe we can pop a CD into the stereo and you two can give us a demonstration and/or a few pointers around the campfire  .......I'm looking at this cup as half full not half empty ;):D ........sounds (to me) like it might be a good way to MAKE points with my gal-pal ;)  :D

BTW, is it bad ediquette to hold a cold "B" in one's hand while dancing with his/her partner? :o:D:P:rolleyes::lol::lol:

Dancing in the desert?

Isn't that something like ordering a hamburger in a Chinese restaurant?
