A Terrible Weekend with Crawdaddy and Strega

Recommended Posts

** EDIT **

Ride complete, reports can be found HERE

Strega and I are going to host another club ride in January 2010.......dates are Jan 15-17 (weather permitting........if rain/snow is in the forecast we'll postpone far enough out that everyone can cancel room reservations at whichever resort you decide to stay at)

I'd like to make it an "all inclusive" ride as we did with the X-Plane ride last year......an opportunity for a bunch of folks with varying abilities on various ADV/Dualsport bikes to bail out of town and enjoy a ride/weekend together......a little "SDAR bonding" before we invite the Dualsport nation into our back yard the following month at the Desert Dash.

As for the "Terrible Weekend" theme, this year's ride will be based out of Terribles Primm Valley Resort: http://www.primmvalleyresorts.com/

Room Info at Buffalo Bills:

$50 a night plus tax, which is 12% so for the weekend its gonna run you $112, at Buffalo Bills. I have stayed at all three up there and I think its the best. The rooms have two King size beds. If someone wants to sleep on the floor or snuggle up next to someone the third person only adds $5. The way I understand it there is a 48 hour cancellation. You may want to confirm that, if its important to you, when you call. Check in is Friday 3 pm and check out is Sunday 12:00 noon. You can probably negotiate a later checkout if you want when your there,,I know I am going to try.

To book your room call 1 800 386 7867 and use the code STS0115. I just faxed over the stuff to them so it will take a day or two for them to get set up so no need to rush in your order. I have 20 rooms guaranteed. We don't have to fill them all but it is first come first served. You have until January 4th to make the call so no pressure.

She is working to get us some perks,,, you know the typical stuff like a trip through the buffet or some discounts and things like that. They have stuff to give away but they hold those things closely until they see how many rooms fill up.

Affordable lodging/food/entertainment and close to Red Rock/Mojave Rd......

The Plan:

Sat : ~140 mile loop over to Red Rock Canyon and back (with breakfast stop at Bonnie Springs).......fuel range of ~95 miles

Red Rock Canyon:

Taking in the view at Red Rock Canyon:

100_0495.jpg

Sun : ~140 mile loop down to, and across a portion of, the eastern half of Mojave Rd including a stop to sign in at the infamous Mailbox .....not a lot of gas stations out in BFE.......all riders heading down to Mojave Rd. on Sunday will need a fuel range of ~110 miles......I will have a bail out mid way across Mojave Rd. but fuel range may still be an issue if you bail early.

Doug at the Mailbox on Mojave Rd. on our way back from the 08 LA-B-V ride:

Navigation will be GPS only so make sure at least one rider in each group has a GPS (and knows how to use it! )......I'll also try to gin up some sort of map to carry but it'll just be a reference tool, not anything suitable for on the fly navigation.....

We will NOT be riding as a big group/pack.....the groups were too large on the X-Plane ride for my tastes......big groups just create a lot of confusion/dust and slow everyone down.........as we get closer, I'd suggest folks pair up or form small groups of like minded riders.......I'd advise against groups larger than 5.....(no need for 10 riders to pull over because someone wants to snap a photo, nature calls, etc.).......small is best/less is more.......there will be plenty of time for group bonding/socializing Friday and Sat evening.........

** note: The other reason we WILL NOT be riding as a large group is permissibility.......they haven't allowed organized dual sport rides through the area behind Mtn Springs (due to a natural spring that flows out onto the trail) or through the main part of the Mojave Preserve for years......that's the reason the LA-B-V ride is unable to obtain permits to ride through a couple of the sections we'll be passing through on both days......that said, individuals ARE allowed to ride their street licensed bikes through both locations......so mum is the word as your group of 5 or less passes through those areas.....this IS NOT an organized/pay to ride/ dual sport event......it's an informal gathering of friends.....

This is an informal ride so you're on your own once you set out from the parking lot........no sweep......each group should have at least one person that knows how to read a map/GPS and each group should also have tools/tubes/tow straps......especially BikeSlut's group B)

I'll probably be riding out of the parking lot around ~7am each morning.......I don't really care when you leave (can you feel the love?) ........I wouldn't start any later than 8am to avoid having to cut either loop short or finishing in the dark..........the rides are relatively easy terrain (for a dualsport bike), and they're each less than 150 miles......distance to breakfast on day one is ~50 miles so we'll be probably have "brunch" over at Bonnie Springs and hit Red Rock before noon.......ride in small groups and don't dilly-dally with too many stops to shoot the breeze (save that for the evening)........relax, enjoy the scenery, snap some photos, have fun......then win some money back at the tables when you return.....

As stated above, neither day will be technical (for smaller dual sports) though there may be a few spots that'll get your attention.....this is meant to be an all inclusive/easy/social affair, not a grind.......DigDug has ridden most everything we'll be riding on his 950 ADV.........that said, not everyone rides like the Dougster.........best not be afraid of a bit of rock in a short section of Red Rock or sandy trails down in the Mojave basin <_<;) .......the tracks have bypasses if you're running late, breakdown, or just don't "want it".....

Looking forward to sharing a Terrible Weekend with my SDAR brothers and sisters.....

dual sport or green sticker? (I know... you have not yet laid out the course)

Makes it easier if I can bring at least one of the kids... and Morgan can keep up for the most part

and start working on the logo now... maybe I can have T shirts by the time the ride begins <_<

Threw some draft/planning tracks/waypoints together today.......looking forward to heading out there again and exploring/fine tuning.......ride is shaping up to be ~140 mile loop over to Red Rock Canyon and back on Day 1 (with breakfast stop at Bonnie Springs).......~140 mile loop down to the eastern half of Mojave Rd. on Day 2 with option for ~200 mile loop for anyone who wants it..........not a lot of gas stations out in BFE.......all riders heading down to Mojave Rd. will need a range of ~110 miles minimum.......not technical rides but best not be afraid of a bit of rock in Red Rock or sandy trails down in Mojave basin :unsure:B)

I'll get out there and fine tune the game plan/tracks in the coming months......stay tuned......

I wouldn't mind going, but only if we can start early and at a specific time. You are always so wishy-washy on your start times B):)   (I crack myself up :) )

200 mile loop sounds good to me. I am not familiar with the area at all yet. Does the route go near the Barker ranch?

Chris- think about using a start-time range:

The ride will begin between 0730 and 0900 with coffee and donuts (Sorry, ken- donut joke) served tableside.

Might be a plan?

Ken - Not heading up into Death Valley (on this trip  ).....

More than one Ken on this site so I'll try....

Fakey: Donut jokes don't bother me. I haven't had a donut in uniform in over 13 years. I also haven't been in uniform in over 13 years  Besides, with $2 baked goods at Starbucks, who'd wanna pay .70 for a donut...?

C-Daddy: Prolly another Ken.

Overall: I'm most likely in on this ride.

Dates ??

I think we'll have to settle on January or March/April because Feb is the month of "The Dash" and we all know how difficult it can be to obtain "2" multi day hall passes in one month ;)B) ........the Mojave Rd. tracks are in the bag as are most of the Red Rock tracks.....just looking to add a few new wrinkles to my previous rides out there.......I intend to have the tracks dialed in before Thanksgiving.......I'm leaning towards a date in January as we did last year with the X-Plane ride......it would be nice for this group of internet pals/geeks/weirdos/fools to get together for a meet and greet/bonding session before we host "The Dash" in February.....

Ave temps:

Red Rock: Jan High 56/Low 32, March High 68/Low 42, April High 78/Low 50
