The Real Suzuki Dual Sport 450

Recommended Posts

You figure ONE of the Japanese brands must see the success that husky and KTM are having with "hard" enduros, and tweak an FI, lectric start MXer...

It won't be Honda, but Suzuki COULD be the one... They'd sell like sushi

I wonder if this can be converted in California

I think the Japanese brands are sort of hurting themselves because they build bikes based on their home market where the hard enduro's are not selling and displacement affects licensing and insurance. I expect we will see a WR450R from Yamaha before we see anything else from the Japanese manufacturers and I don't hold out a lot of hope for a barebones MX bike with a plate as it seems the philosophy of Japanese interpretation of "enduro" or "dual sport" has always been different than Europe's. I am not sure which Japanese brand I would think would be willing to take that risk

oops meant 450R

Thats nice to see. I think depending on what Honda and Yamaha/Kawi do with their off road bikes this year you might see a lot of people pick those up due to being first out the door of the Jap 450's with EFI

Good point but I dont think I would want to be one of the first to test a new bike (especially with EFI) and be in Baja or BFE and have something go wrong.

Ill stick with my tried and true WR

None the less, it looks SICK!

It's only new on the offroad model they have already had EFI on the RMZ-450 for a year all the manufacturers are going to EFI so its not like its unproven tech. It might sound stupid but never worrying about jetting, never having to shut the fuel off manually or forget, never having to go in and clean the carb because the bike sat a while. I love EFI

I love EFI

Me too.

FI is the way of the future. Eventually all modern dirtbikes will be FI just as every other mode of transportation has already switched. The technology is decades old. It's new to your dirtbike and that's the only reason you're scared. Historically riders from each classs of motorcycle were sceptical as FI was introduced to "their" bikes. When I drove my first EFI car, I knew there was no way I'd ever do a carbed anything again. I sold my sketchy carbed Honda for a brilliantly fuel mapped Aprilia. Let me tell ya how nice it is.

I don't see why they couldn't just file an extra bit of paperwork and then it would be the Jap built, street legal dirtbike thousands have been waiting for.

I think Kawasaki will be the next with a street legal dirtbike.

I'm sure when they first started putting electronic ignition on dirt bikes people were saying the same sort of thing.....you'll pry my points and condensor from my cold dead hands!

Im all for EFI, I just want the reliability I am currently used too thats all :)

Concur! I'm hoping for nothing but good news about the EFI systems on dirtbikes. I hardly ever buy anything new, so when it comes time to buy my EFI machine it will have a few years of reviews.

EFI has been around for a bunch of years. My BMW (1999) had it and I loved it. Better response than a carb, and altitude never affected it. Never a problem. Its all in the $ and the stigmatism of 'change'. Just like the old school mechanic that doesnt like synthetic oils. (it gets dirty but doesnt break down like reg oil) Change can be good. Whats stopping me from buying an EFI bike? $$$$. Thats the only reason.

the only real world deficiency with this machine is that it still has the MX OEM tank........ 1.6gal

This bike is still a closed course enduro/XC machine

Oooohhhh. That's not gonna cut the Southwestern mustard. I see the stock tank is also alluminum. The perimeter frames do look nice but they make it so difficult to get bigger tanks.

I figure most of your hondas have CDI ignition, no? Do you carry an ignition file in your tool roll?

EFI is a wonderful thing when done right. On some BMW's the fuel pump and filter (critical components) are mounted inside the fuel tank. This makes it hard to replace if you are out of the shop, and the parts are expensive. On many of the new bikes that I look at you could swear that someone deliberately made it complicated and difficult to maintain the bike yourself.

this has been a VERY hotly debated topic on TT in the last few months.

there is absolutely no reason that bike or any other brand enduro bike ie klx450, crf450x, wr450f could not have fi on it and easily be street legalized. as was said basically paper work. the problem is all of the little details, kickstand kill switch, and the issue that is the toughest is smog laws. i think with very lean mapping the bike should easily pass street emissions. part of the problem though is ktm and husky have a larger window for total ppms allowed because of being small co. and not alot of street bikes.

companies have a total max allowable emissions, if you are honda or yam, you are way up on the amount because of the shear number of street bikes in your line.

but with minimal additions there is virtually no reason the rmx450z, wr450f {add fi} the crf450x, klx450f each with add efi could pass emissions to be made street legal and become a huge market niche

imho

all valid points, but the fact remains... they CAN neuter a bike enough to pass any smog laws... grey wires, charcoal canisters, kill switches, etc... those are already in the parts bin... cob it together or whatever, but give us a WR450 for the street

or an RMZ...

as to your "total emissions per manufacturer" ... different side of the same coin... no rush to bring these bikes to market; cruisers, tourers and sport bikes... old tech dual sports (with no R&D left to pay for)... depressed market; slumping sales... we won't see anything until Obama gets us out of this financial mess

;)

i agree we wont see one soon unfortunately....but without any real r&d needed, as you say "parts already in the bin" just put one together and see if it sells, who would it hurt? HELLLLLOOOO yamaha.....kawwwiiiii.....suuuuuuzzzzuuuki ki ki ki...are you there ere ere ;)
