Sierra Club Endorses Steve Francis For Mayor

Richard Miller: “Steve Francis has a bold environmental vision and a plan to get us there.”

San Diego, CA – Today, the Sierra Club endorsed Steve Francis for Mayor. The endorsement was announced at Rose Canyon Park, the site of the proposed Regents Road Bridge project. Francis earlier came out in opposition to that project because of the environmental harm it would do to Rose Canyon Park, one of San Diego’s natural open space preserves.

Richard Miller, the Chair of the San Diego chapter of the Sierra Club, said “Steve Francis has a bold environmental vision to get San Diego on the list of the world’s greenest cities. We applaud that goal and are particularly impressed with his concrete plans to get us to that goal.”

Steve Francis proudly accepted the endorsement, saying, “I am thrilled that the Sierra Club is endorsing me. We share the goal of getting San Diego on the list of the top green cities in the world. I have announced a bold but achievable GREEN initiative – because we can do our part to protect our canyons, parks and open spaces. We can reduce global warming emissions and conserve water. We can make our buildings more efficient and make our fleet of city vehicles and taxis hybrids. We can do all of this with vision and leadership.”

Debby Knight, Sierra Club member and President of Friends of Rose Canyon, said, “Steve Francis is committed to putting the needs of the environment before the needs of the big developers. His courageous stand against developers in opposing the proposed Regents Road bridge project won me over. It shows he will do the right thing to preserve our open space parks and canyons.”

Francis has released an ambitious GREEN Initiative, which can be found on his website, steveformayor.com/vision. The plan includes items such as converting the city’s fleet of vehicles and taxis to hybrids, pursuing cutting edge mass transit solutions and protecting San Diego’s open spaces, parks, beaches and canyons.

The endorsement of the Sierra Club, which boasts 7,000 members in San Diego, comes on the heels of Monday’s endorsement of Steve Francis by UNITE HERE Local 30 – the first local union to announce its endorsement of Francis.

Steve Francis?

It's unfortunate that many politicians rely on a single platform to run, and that many voters vote based on one or a few issues...

I don't know him, but I have a pretty good idea of the Sierra Club vision (I WAS a member) and i don't gel with their vision of enjoying nature... I know who I'm not voting for too

My response to the email:

Your acceptance of the Sierra Club endorsement has cost you my vote. It is possible to be environmentally motivated without having a single sided, extremist, hypocritical organization behind you. Good luck and please remove me from any future mailings.

What a trade off. Wich one is worse. Francis who is going green, or Mayor Sanders who is in bed with developers, police, fire unions, and bankrupting our city for the future of our children? It would be nice to one day have someone worth a shite in office!

Bum, I have to say something about this statemant.

"Mayor Sanders who is in bed with.... police, fire unions."

Sanders, has f'd both PD and Fire every chance he has had. You won't beleive what Sanders thinks of Reserve Military Personnel working for the City and stationed over in Iraq and elsewhere, either. The city just plain screws them over and he believes they should get out of the military or quit their jobs. PD and Fire both are loosing experienced personnel to other Departments and Cities. But you won't hear about FF's leaving thanks to the Media in this town or the wonderful one and only UT paper. I have not had a raise in four years and even received a pay reduction of 6%. Had it not been from overtime at the Witch Fire, I would have made less less in '07 than either of the three previous years..... Yes, Fire gets a pay increase this July of 3% and later on 2%, so we will still be making less than four years ago. No COLA's here either. We continue to spriral down the list of what FF's are paid state wide. UGH! I could go on n on..... but won't.

I cannot afford to live in SD, so I will not have a choice betwixt Sanders or Francis. Even so, it would be tough to decide between them.

Sorry, Bum, you struck a nerve here..... Please do not take it personal or the wrong way.

No need to apologize. Everyone has a right to what they believe. I do not take it personal. So when I say this please do the same.

Police have just gotten a raise, with another coming in 2-3 years. Salary is now I believe 75,000 a year. The academy is turning people away left and right. Nice secure goverment job with lots of overtime, excellent retirement, and Health benefits.

Not sure what the salary for FF is nowadays. All the FF I have ever met love thier jobs and are usually doing pretty darn well finacially. They have excellent retirement packages, and health benefits. Most that I have met have second hobbies/job that they participate in with thier down time. This never comes up when comparing salaries to that of the private sector.

Being the average joe, I worked for a company for 11 years with NO pay increases. Watched the company nickel and dime us every chance they could. Health benefits were not that good to begin with, and got worse as time went by. Retirement, Ha Ha Ha, it was only what we did for ourselves. This is not even worse case senario that exsists in the work force of San Diego. When Police and Fire unions are comparing salaries of people, they are always comparing to the higher ups in companies. Take an average of what most of have to get by with and maybe you would see that the grass isnt greener on the other side.

When my kids start to think about careers, I will be suggesting Police and Fire, not a peon is some company.

With all this being said, I would also like to say that I have great respect for people who put their lives on the line to help others.

Typical Conversation,

Those that set an example in the community for what everyone should have in the way of labor standards are attacked because the typical private employment situation screws the labor force. My job sucks, so why should I support anyone in the public sector that can afford to send his/her kids to the dentist or get eyeglasses, much less college. Our energies might be better spent sending a message to our Republican ("I don't believe in government") representatives that "We are Mad as hell and we are not going to take it any longer".

Yes, I am one of "those" wacky Americans that think universal health care and a decent retirement for all should be a national priority. But I diverge.

I propose we support better labor standards for all.

Not that I have any respect for the two candidates running for mayor. Not that I support near full retirement pay at 55. Not that I support job tenure.

Regards "Tree Huggers," I support them also. I am an endangered species myself...a Union Electrical Contractor.
