RogerTOWM 0 Posted October 16, 2008 First cut at a VERY PRELIMINARY/LOOSE plan: Saturday - 7/25 Ramona to Prescott Sunday - 7/26 Prescott to Page Monday - 7/27 Page to Green River Tuesday - 7/28 Green River to Moab Wednesday - 7/29 Moab to Ouray Thursday - 7/30 Ouray to Buena Vista Friday/Sat - 7/31 & 8/1 West Fest! Sunday - 8/2 Buena Vista to Delores Monday - 8/3 Delores to Glen Canyon Tuesday - 8/4 Burr Trail to Page Wednesday - 8/5 Page to Jerome Thursday - 8/6 Jerome to Ramona Chris I know I could do this myself, but I figure that you have already done it so why make twice the work. Would you mind adding the mileage between stops?
Crawdaddy 96 Posted October 16, 2008 Chris I know I could do this myself, but I figure that you have already done it so why make twice the work. Would you mind adding the mileage between stops? I've only ROUGH sketched it so far on a combination of pavement/dirt. Basically it's a nothern swing from Page up to Moab.......one full day day of screwing around in Moab on Pavement (Arches) and easy (White Rim) trails........then east out of Moab on a variety of back roads followed by the northern part of the Alpine Loop from Telluride to Ouray via Imogene Pass......then the final push north from Ouray to Buena Vista through Montrose/Gunnison.......2 days of screwing around in the Buena Vista/Taylor Park area as part of West Fest.......then a repeat of my ride last month from Buena Vista south to Silverton via Cinnamon Pass and the southern part of the Alpine Loop over Ophir Pass to Delores......then due west and up Valley of the Gods Highway that connects 163 with 261 along with some more dirt over to Glen Canyon National Rec Area........then pick up the Burr Trail in Glen Canyon and take that back over to Boulder before dropping back down to Page......I hesitate to post my Mapsource musings until I further refine the gameplan........ I'll probably put an assortment of tracks/proposed routes up on the trip planning forum of ADVRider in the coming months and solicit input from folks who live in the various areas I'll be riding though to make sure certain areas are "ungated/unrestricted" and also to solicit other ideas.....I'll post a link to that thread and it's associated .gpx file once I put it up..... SO, this route will be fine tuned numerous times......may even change completely.......but since you asked, here's TODAY's VERY ROUGH ESTIMATE of mileage per currently envisioned leg (without getting into the ratio of pavment to dirt). Saturday 7/25 Ramona to Prescott: ~350 Sunday 7/26 Prescott to Page - ~300 Monday 7/27 Page to Green River: ~375 Tuesday 7/28 Green River to Moab (Arches/White Rim Trail ~200) Wednesday 7/29 Moab to Ouray: ~200 Thursday 7/30 Ouray to Buena Vista: ~170 Friday/Sat 7/31/8/1 West Fest! ~X? miles/day Sunday 8/2 Buena Vista to Delores: ~250 Monday 8/3 Delores to Glen Canyon: ~ 300 Tuesday 8/4 Burr Trail to Page: ~175 Wednesday 8/5 Page to Jerome ~275 Thursday 8/6 Jerome to Ramona ~

Crawdaddy 96 Posted October 21, 2008 Hi Chris This looks doable. Depending on how many you get to sign up and how my wife's plans end up I may be able to accomadate a couple of people sleeping on the floor. I may ride with you the Page through Burr Trail leg, take the ferry from Bull Frog across the lake and go back to Page the southern route. If someone wants to do a short version of your trip they could join me. This is all tentative of course. Don Don, Strega (who claims he WILL have an Adventure Bike by next summer) and I were talking about this while driving to Bishop last weekend......I'm thinking I may drive a truck, or a truck pulling a trailer, with X bikes to your place and start/finish the loop there (and just leave the truck/trailer at your place if that's OK with you).......it'll be blazing hot that time of year so I'd be slabbing it over to your place anyway, for the most part, if I was on the bike.....that'll save ~1,200 miles on the bike/tires/my ass!......and allow a long first/last day "driving" leg so I can spend more time "riding" ~2,000 miles in Utah/CO.......it also places a truck closer to the action if we have a breakdown......What route do you take when driving over? Also, I was planning on riding the Burr Trail on the return end of the trip over to Page rather than from Page in the begining of the trip (though I'm open to suggestion/change....plans are very preliminary).....rough sketch of the plan is below: Monday 7/27 Page to Green River: ~375 miles 89 / Cottonwood Canyon / 12 / John’s Valley Rd. / Nf-17 / 12 / Nf-153 (Hells Back Bone) / 12 / unnamed(?) dirt road through Capital Reef / 24 / Robber’s Roost & misc. dirt Roads to Green River Tuesday 7/28 Green River to Moab (Arches/White Rim Trail and/or (?) ~200 miles) Old US 50 / 70 / 191 / 94 / Salt Valley Rd. / Arches / & Misc. goofing around in Moab area Wednesday 7/29 Moab to Ouray: ~200 miles Sand Flats Rd. / Lasal Mountain / Geyser Creek / Geyser Pass / Q13 / 141 / 145 / 145 Spur (Imogene Pass) / 550 Thursday 7/30 Ouray to Buena Vista: ~170 miles 550 / 50 / 135 / CR 742 / CR 209 / 306 / Friday/Sat 7/31/8/1 West Fest! ~X? miles/day Sunday 8/2 Buena Vista to Delores: ~250 miles 306 / CR 209 / CR 742 / 135 / 50 / 114 / Nf-14 / Kk-14 / CR 45 / CR 15 / CR 5 / 149 / CR 30 / CR 4 / CR 5 (Cinnamon) / CR 2 / 110 / 550 / CR 8 / 630 Rd. (Ophir) / D65 / 145 Monday 8/3 Delores to Glen Canyon: ~ 300 miles 145 / 184 / 491 / Road Bb / Road 10 / Hovenweep Rd. (Bia 5069) / CR 212 / CR 2416 / 262 / 191 / 163 / Valley of the Gods Rd. / 261 / Muley Point / 261 / 95 / Elk Mountain TT / Woodenshoe Rd. / CR 212A / CR 2271 / 95 / 276 Tuesday 8/4 Burr Trail to Page: ~175 miles CR 1668 (Burr Trail Rd.) / 12 / Hole in the Rock Rd. / Missing Canyon / Warm Creek / 89 I posted the draft GPS track over at ADVRider: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=396485 Today's Teaser Pic: Valley of the Gods Rd. Crawdaddy 96 Posted October 21, 2008 Chris, I think I'm gonna have to head to Colorado in August...girls and bikes...this is a good thing I can't argue with that kinda logic .....West Fest ends on August 2nd and Buena Vista is only ~75 miles south of Keystone.....too bad I can't take a month off from work instead of a couple of weeks.... I have plenty of room for vehicles and trailers. This plan should be no problem. I did some riding around the lake on Sunday and on the dirt road we will be taking between Page and Escalante. I will be posting some more photos but this is one of the lake. Don PS Sorry - this one was obviously not the lake. I will try to be beter next time.

Don Thanks Don .....starting to get some good input on ADV rider against the draft .gpx file I posted...... Chris This is what the start of the 90 mile road out of Page will look like. About 20 miles in we will ascend those cliffs in the background up a winding set of switchbacks to get on top of the Kaiparowitz Plateau. Terrain changes on top. Zenosan 2 Posted October 24, 2008 I'd like to do this. Not sure if Ill have a different bike but I would like to do it anyway. Jaynen Nothing wrong with your wr250. Even though the Honda in the photo is one of my Honda XL350R's I often ride this road with my brother on my 79 XL250 and he rides my 84 Yamaha XT250. We often do about 125 miles fuel up in Escalante and ride back with plenty of stops along the way. When you get on top of the plateau the road gets plenty technical and a light 250 will run circles around the big bikes in this terrain. Don't let the big bikes intimidate you. There really is such a thing as too much bike when doing this kind of riding (sorry Chris & Wayne - I am sure you guys must think this a little too old school). Don
Jaynen 0 Posted October 24, 2008 It's not the riding once I am out there, its the riding out there as opposed to hauling out there ideally. But then again if its a splitting costs with someone and trailering multiple bikes it wouldnt be so bad.

Don Nice......looking forward to it.....actually I've been looking forward to a return to Utah/Colorado ever since my last visit to the area .......those two states are hard to top for dirt biking/skiing/rafting/hiking/etc......I'd relocate to the area in a heartbeat if it wasn't for a couple of 4 letter words/obligations - "kids" & "work"......for now, I'll settle for a yearly visit (or two.....or three)

Much of my last trip to Lake Powell was spent admiring the country side and wishing I had a dirt bike to do some exploring on. Ken I am a part time resident of Page and keep a Jeep, dualsport bikes and boats at my house. I commute back and forth to Escondido. Just so you don't develop any illusions - it can get cold there in the winter. I was uploading a photo of my dog in the snow in my from yard which was in March of 06 but for some reason it gotr uploaded into Rogers' post. Anyway, that is my dog "Wolfie" in your post Roger. I suspect we were posting at the same time. Don

Crawdaddy 96 Posted October 28, 2008 Someone on ADVRider just put together a slideshow from What a difference a month makes.....I went through many of these same areas a month later and found less snow/shallower water crossings/nice & sunny weather......guess I got lucky....... Next year's rally will be a tad further east/north in Buena Vista/Taylor Park......but we'll ride through the 08 area on our way over/back
